Cognitive Load: Why Some Work Feels Heavy

Where the idea comes from

John Sweller developed cognitive load theory from the late 1980s in an educational context, distinguishing load intrinsic to the material from extraneous load added by how it is presented. The theory has been influential in instructional design and, like most influential theories, has been stretched well past its evidence in popular use.

How it shows up

  • Simple work feeling exhausting when the setup is messy

What actually helps

  • Reduce extraneous load first: fewer open windows, one document, decisions made in advance

  • Build reusable structure so the same setup is not reconstructed daily
  • Do the highest-load work when load capacity is highest, which for most people is early

Where the popular version overreaches

Cognitive load theory comes from instructional design and is about learning materials. Applying it to every kind of tiredness at work is a stretch, and "reduce cognitive load" has become a phrase that means "make it simpler" with a scientific accent.

What is the difference between intrinsic and extraneous load?
Intrinsic load comes from the material — a hard proof is hard. Extraneous load comes from how it is presented or arranged: bad formatting, scattered tooling, having to hold context the environment could have shown you. The second kind is the one you can remove.
