Light rain is the most widely tolerated background sound there is, and the reason is structural rather than aesthetic: it is broadband, it has no melody to follow, and it never resolves. There is nothing in it for attention to grab.

- Falling asleep in an unfamiliar or noisy place
- Long sessions, since it does not fatigue the way music does
Where it falls down
Light rain masks mid and high frequencies well and does little about a bass-heavy neighbour or traffic rumble. For those, brown noise is the better tool.
Sound is not the whole problem
Background audio sets the conditions for concentration and cannot do anything about whether you stayed on the task — it plays the same whether you are working or twenty minutes into something else. If the honest description of your problem is that you put something on and lost the hour anyway, the missing piece is not a better sound. It is something that notices.

- Why do rain sounds help concentration?
- Mostly by masking. A steady broadband sound raises the noise floor so intermittent sounds — a conversation, a door, a notification in the next room — stop punching through and pulling attention. It is not that rain is calming so much as that it removes the things that interrupt you.
- Do these rain sounds loop noticeably?
- The recording is long enough that the seam is hard to find, and rain has no rhythm to anchor a repeat, which is why it loops better than almost anything else. Music and birdsong give the ear something to recognise; rain does not.
- Is it safe to sleep with rain sounds on all night?
- Keep the volume low — around the level of a quiet conversation or below. The usual caution about all-night audio is about sustained volume rather than the sound itself, and it applies more to headphones than to a speaker across the room.
