Body Doubling for Remote Workers

An office supplied structure you never chose and probably never noticed. Working from home removes it silently, and body doubling replaces the part that actually mattered.

What the work is actually like

Remote work removes several things at once: a commute that marked the start, other people visibly working, a room that meant work, and the mild awareness of being seen. None of it was in your job description, and losing all of it at once is why the same work is suddenly harder.

Where presence helps

  • Starting the day when nothing marks its beginning
  • The afternoon slump, where an office would have carried you
  • Admin and email that nobody is chasing you for
  • Days with no meetings, which sound ideal and often disappear

Where it does not — and may make things worse

This is the part most articles skip. Presence raises arousal, and raised arousal pushes you toward what you already know how to do. That is excellent for well-learned work and actively unhelpful when the job is to find something you do not yet have.

  • Days already full of calls — you have plenty of presence and no time

A session that fits this work

  • Put a session at the start of the day as a substitute commute: same time, same place, every day
  • One surface used only for work, even if it is one end of a table
  • Book the session before the calendar fills, not into whatever is left
  • Close the laptop at the end of the last block — the office had a door, and you need something that closes

The failure mode for remote workers

Confusing presence with communication. Slack is company and it is also interruption; it supplies the feeling of other people while destroying the conditions they used to provide. A silent session with a stranger does more for your afternoon than an active channel.

If none of this is landing, the problem may be upstream: read what body doubling actually is, or why starting is the hard part.

Common questions

Is body doubling just a substitute for an office?
It is a substitute for one specific part of an office — other people working nearby — without the commute, the noise, or the interruptions. That part turns out to be most of what the office was contributing to your concentration.
