Body Doubling for Email and Admin

Admin is the purest avoidance task: trivially easy, mildly unpleasant, and infinitely postponable. It is also the work presence helps most.

What the work is actually like

Email, forms, expenses, invoices, appointments. Each item takes two minutes and requires almost nothing of you except beginning it — and because nothing is difficult, there is nothing to feel proud of afterwards, which is part of why it accumulates.

Where presence helps

  • Inbox backlogs measured in hundreds
  • Forms and applications with deadlines you keep noticing
  • Expenses, invoices, and everything financial you postpone
  • The specific email you have been not-writing for three weeks

Where it does not — and may make things worse

This is the part most articles skip. Presence raises arousal, and raised arousal pushes you toward what you already know how to do. That is excellent for well-learned work and actively unhelpful when the job is to find something you do not yet have.

  • Difficult, high-stakes messages that need real thought — those deserve their own quiet time, not a batch

A session that fits this work

  • Set a timer and do not sort first — sorting is avoidance with a filing system
  • Oldest first or newest first, but decided in advance so no item costs you a decision
  • Twenty-five minutes maximum. Admin at length degrades into browsing
  • Write the difficult one first, while the session is new

The failure mode for anyone with a backlog

Building a system. Filters, folders and a new inbox methodology all feel like progress and clear nothing. If the backlog is the problem, the backlog is the session.

If none of this is landing, the problem may be upstream: read what body doubling actually is, or why starting is the hard part.

Common questions

Why is email so hard to start when each message is easy?
Because the difficulty is not in any message. It is in the undefined size of the pile and the absence of a finish line — every item is trivial and the set has no visible end, which is a shape people avoid regardless of how easy the parts are.
