Brown Noise vs White Noise: Which One for Which Problem
They are not the same sound at different volumes. Here is what actually separates the noise colours, and how to pick by what you are trying to cover up.
People talk about noise colours as if they were flavours — pick the one you like. They are better understood as tools, and the right one depends entirely on what is bothering you.
The actual difference
All three are broadband noise. What separates them is how energy is distributed across frequency.
- White noise carries equal power at every frequency. Flat, bright, hissy.
- Pink noise falls about 3 dB per octave. Roughly equal energy per octave, which is how hearing is spaced, so it sounds balanced.
- Brown noise falls about 6 dB per octave. Almost everything at the bottom — closer to distant surf than to hiss.
That is the whole technical story, and it has a direct practical consequence.
Masking is the mechanism
Background sound helps concentration mostly by masking: raising the noise floor so intermittent sounds stop punching through. An interruption you never consciously registered still cost you attention, and masking prevents it from arriving at all.
Which means the useful question is not "which noise is best" but what frequency range is the thing bothering me?

Why the ADHD community favours brown
Brown noise has become strongly associated with ADHD online, and a great many people report it works for them where white does not. That is worth taking seriously as a signal about preference.
It is worth being straight about the evidence, though: the research base here is thin, and much thinner than the confidence of the posts. The reasonable position is that brown noise is easy on the ear, easy to leave on for hours, and clearly helpful for a lot of individual people — and that "the science says" is doing work it has not earned.
Test it on yourself for a week against pink. You will have better evidence about you than any study currently offers.
Volume matters more than colour
The most common mistake is playing it too loud. Masking works by raising the floor above the interruption — the right amount is the least that does the job, and anything beyond that is just more noise you have chosen.
If you can hear it clearly while working, it is probably too loud. It should be the thing you notice is missing when it stops.
What no noise colour does
None of them knows whether you are working. They play identically whether you are on the task or twenty minutes into something else, which is a real limit and not a criticism — it is what audio is.
